Steve is a proven leader with decades of law enforcement and administrative experience.

Sheriff Steve Bush brings unmatched experience to the role of Floyd County Sheriff. Starting as a patrol officer in New Albany in 1991, he rose through the ranks over three decades—serving as a detective, SWAT team member, and eventually as a Merit Captain leading proactive crime prevention efforts. In addition to his law enforcement service, Steve also served 12 years as a Floyd County Commissioner, including six years as board president. In 2022, the voters of Floyd County elected him Sheriff—and he got to work on day one.

Education & Training

Sheriff Steve Bush is a graduate of Indiana State University, where he built the academic foundation that launched his career in public service. He further completed professional law enforcement training through the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, along with advanced leadership and command-level development programs throughout his career.

With more than 30 years of law enforcement experience, Sheriff Bush has continually invested in ongoing education, tactical training, leadership instruction, and professional certifications to ensure he and his department operate at the highest standards. His commitment to training extends beyond himself — he has prioritized structured promotional pathways and leadership development programs to prepare the next generation of officers and command staff.

Honors & Recognition

Sheriff Steve Bush’s leadership and service have earned recognition at both the local and state levels. He is a recipient of the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash, one of Indiana’s highest civilian honors, awarded to individuals who have demonstrated distinguished service and leadership to the State of Indiana. This award reflects his lifelong commitment to public safety, community leadership, and service beyond self. He was also voted Floyd County’s Best Politician (2025–2026) by the New Albany News & Tribune, a testament to the trust and confidence placed in him by the community.

Throughout his career, Sheriff Bush has received commendations for professional excellence, leadership, and community engagement. Whether strengthening inmate rehabilitation initiatives, investing in departmental training, or building stronger relationships across Floyd County, his work continues to reflect integrity, accountability, and a heart for service.

Political Experience

Before being elected Sheriff in 2022, Steve Bush served the community for 12 years as a County Commissioner, where he gained extensive experience in budgeting, infrastructure planning, public safety oversight, and collaborative governance. That experience provided him with a deep understanding of how county government functions — and how to effectively lead within it.

As Sheriff, he has applied that experience to restructure leadership, strengthen staffing, modernize investigative operations, and implement data-driven policing strategies. His leadership blends real-world law enforcement experience with proven government oversight — delivering results that keep Floyd County safe, strong, and moving forward.
